Cullinary Classes with Kalona Brewing Company

Kalona Brewing Company is excited to partner with Kirkwood Community College to offer five culinary classes to area residents. The Power of Egg Yolks – January 26, 6-8pm
**Important note – registration deadline Friday, January 22nd by 5:00pm**
Eggs are incredible! In this basic technique class you will learn some aspects of cooking with egg yolks. Cody from the Kalona Brewery will teach you how to make three amazing egg yolk based standards: hollandaise sauce, custard and mayonnaise. Come prepared for fun hands-on learning and tasting! Materials fee $15.

Winter Soups – February 9, 6-8pm
Soups on! With the colder temperatures, wouldn’t you like to treat yourself to some lush winter soups? Join head Chef Justine at the Kalona Brewery and learn the secrets of making chili, how to make an amazing hearty and creamy potato soup, and finally, try your hand at a velvety rich butternut squash soup. (Availability of ingredients may change the soup selection).

Homemade Pasta – February 23, 6-8pm
Making your own great pasta at home isn’t as hard as you think! Cody from the Kalona Brewery will teach you how to make, roll out, cut, fill and cook authentic fresh pasta. You’ll love mastering these authentic dishes, including fettuccine, ravioli and gnocchi. Materials fee $15.

Sweet Sauces – March 8, 6-8pm
Calling all sweet tooths! Would you like to liven up some of your desserts at home? Adding a simple sweet sauce can be just the right touch to a tasty dessert at the end of your meal. Head Chef Justine from the Kalona Brewery will teach you how to make some very simple sweet sauces such as strawberry sauce, chocolate ganache, warm vanilla sauce, caramel and others as time allows! Come get your sweet tooth satisfied! Materials fee $15.

The Five Classic French Mother Sauces – March 22, 6-8pm
If you’re serious about taking your cooking to the next level, mastering the art of sauce making is a must. To learn sauces, you must first start at the beginning, and understand the framework laid out in western culinary schools today using The Five French Mother Sauces. You will learn the basics of hollandaise, béchamel, veloute, espagnole and tomato sauces. Understanding these foundational sauces will allow you to create any sauce you can imagine! Join Cody at the Kalona Brewery for this fun and tasty class.
